My Favorite Plants to Grow

This week I wanted to share and discuss my personal favorite plants to grow in the spring and summer seasons. These plants are beginner friendly and I have had great success with them in the Seattle climate. I chose this list based on production, taste, and ease during the gardening process. If you have other favorites or disagree with my list feel free to leave a comment.

Butter Lettuce

One of my absolute favorite lettuces to grow is butter lettuce. Butter lettuce is a prolific grower in the Seattle climate and was one of the first crops that I grew an abundance of. This was a great experience because it meant I was able to share with my neighbors and friends. Butter lettuce is a mild lettuce with a softer texture somewhere between a romaine and spinach. I personally like the mild taste since it can be used in a variety of salads and recipes, this also means that it is usually a fan favorite.

Green Onions

Green Onions are another favorite, their versatility is absolutely fantastic. I use green onions in so many meals that the ease of getting them from my garden instead of a store is great. In my experience they need very little attention to grow. I planted my first in a small pot outside and with occasional watering and some sunlight they were growing like crazy. They are delicious and require such little attention they had to make my list!

Snap Peas

Snap Peas were one of the first vegetables I grew, and while they can be finicky and do require a trellis or fence to grow on they are a delicious addition to a garden. Snap peas yield a high amount of produce and do well in the Seattle climate. I enjoyed the variety they brought to my garden salads, and they make a great snack. They are slightly sweet and so refreshing when coming straight from the garden!

Hibiscus

Growing Hibiscus was an all around wonderful experience. It is a beautiful plant, with beautiful flowers, and makes delicious tea. I grew hibiscus from seed and it was one of the easier plants I grew. My plant grew tall and large in the planter it was put in and had a long season of blooming which meant I got lots of tea leaves. If you are interested in adding color to your garden or bringing in some tea plants consider hibiscus!
